Although CATZ\u00ae Dry Gin has a contemporary and innovative look, the brand is deeply rooted in the rich Dutch distilling history. Its origins date back to 1789, when Heiman Cohen Catz established himself as an apothecary in Pekela, Groningen. In his pharmacy, alcoholic tinctures and medicines were prepared – a craft that would later form the basis for something greater. <\/p>

It was his son Bernard who took the first step toward distilling. In developing aromatic herbal bitters, liqueurs and elixirs, he laid the foundations for a tradition of flavor, craftsmanship and refinement – a heritage that lives on today in every bottle of CATZ\u00ae Dry Gin. <\/p>

His descendants founded the trading company “Firma Gebroeders CATZ” in 1857, which would grow into the global CATZ International. One of the largest trading houses in herbs and spices. Meanwhile, Salomon Catz continued the tradition of herbal drinks under the name CATZ & Son of Pekela – known for elixirs such as Red and Green Pommerans, once indispensable in Dutch gin culture. <\/p>

After a period of acquisitions and mergers, the brand disappeared from view in the late 1970s. But a name with so much history deserves a new future – and it’s here now, in the form of CATZ\u00ae Dry Gin. A tribute to two centuries of Dutch distilling craft, brought back to life by CATZ\u00ae Dry Gin.<\/p>

A tangible tribute to this rich history is reflected in the bottle design. CATZ\u00ae Dry Gin is presented in a modernized version of the iconic “cellar bottle” – a robust, square bottle that has its origins in the Dutch Golden Age. At the time, these bottles were used to safely transport spirits, such as gin, in the holds – or cellars – of VOC ships.
